Family Role as Support Staff

Parents together with their children are expected to participate in the Catholic Community of St. John by joining in the celebration of Mass and partaking in the Sacraments they have received. Parents need to give visible signs of their faith through prayers, worship and sacramental celebrations. It is important that parents make religious education a priority so as to enrich our children's lives with our Catholic values and traditions. Religious Education must begin with regular attendance at the Sunday Liturgy, thus providing a sound basis for Faith Formation classes.

At baptism, as parents, you were named the primary educator of your child. You have the major responsibility for the development of the gift of faith in your child. The Religious Education Catechist is merely an aide to the parent's role in this process. Be familiar with the material they are using. Feel free to consult any member of our staff with questions or concerns, and by all means please take advantage to discuss, share and build a faith relationship with your child.

Sacramental Preparation

At St. John Parish the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are an early step on your child's journey of faith - not the end of the journey. It will be the beginning of life-long communion in the Catholic faith. Reconciliation and the Body and Blood of Christ will be available to strengthen and grace your child at every step of life's journey. For each family, these first sacraments are a chance for a new beginning, for a renewal of dedication to and appreciation of the sacraments.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is normally administered at St. John in the Sophomore year of high school after a two-year preparation program. Registration takes place in May for the following academic year through the parish religious education office. Confirmation Candidates are required to attend Mass weekly. Adults wishing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation should contact Father Mark at 860-635-5590.

Registration

Families registering their child(ren) into the Religious Education program must be registered parishioners of St. John. All new students should present a copy of their Baptismal certificate to be kept on file, if the student was not baptized at St. John, Cromwell. Registration takes place in June for the following school year. It is important to register at this time so that classes may be organized during the summer months.

Tuition fees for religious education are announced prior to June registration. The religious education fees only partially cover the total costs of the program and families are expected to support the church through regular offertory contributions as well. Costs covered by tuition and parish subsidy include the following: textbooks, catechist manuals & materials, staff salaries, weekly rental for the Saturday morning use of  WIS School in Cromwell, catechist education programs sponsored by the diocese, sacramental preparation, communication costs, curriculum development, in-service catechists programs and general office operation.
